Botox & Fillers Q & A

What is Botox?

Botox is an FDA-approved injectable cosmetic treatment used to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines on your forehead and crow’s feet around your eyes. Botox is derived from the botulinum toxin and works by temporarily paralyzing the small muscles that contract and pull your skin into facial expressions.

Your wrinkles develop as your skin loses elasticity and is less able to spring back into place after forming these expressions, such as smiling and frowning. When you have Botox injections, your muscles stop moving, and the skin covering them relaxes, reducing the appearance of your wrinkles.

What are dermal fillers?

Like Botox, dermal fillers are injectable cosmetic treatments that improve the appearance of your skin. However, dermal fillers are gels made from hyaluronic acid, collagen, and other synthetic materials that mimic substances found naturally in your body.

Your aesthetic specialist injects dermal fillers into your skin to restore lost volume in your lips and to contour your cheeks. They can also fill in deep wrinkles and lines as well as depressed scars.

What should I expect during cosmetic treatments using injectables?

When you have a Botox or dermal filler treatment, your aesthetic specialist examines and cleanses your face. If you’re squeamish about needles or have sensitive skin, you can request a cold compress or a topical numbing cream to reduce any discomfort.

Then, the doctor begins making injections. Botox injections are typically completed in 10-20 minutes. Dermal fillers take a little more time as your doctor needs to stop frequently to examine the progress and gently massage the filler into place.

You’ll notice the effects of Botox within 24-48 hours as your skin relaxes. The results of dermal fillers are immediately apparent. Both Botox and dermal fillers have temporary effects, and you need occasional touch-up treatments to maintain your smooth skin and youthful appearance.

How should I take care of my skin after an injectable treatment?

Your doctor provides customized advice on how you should take care of your skin after a cosmetic treatment. In general, you should gently apply cleansers and moisturizers to your face. You should always wear sunscreen, as the harmful UV rays in the sun contribute significantly to collagen loss and aging.
